Can a home sewing machine sew leather?
Some can, within limits. The relevant variables are leather type, leather thickness, the machine's motor power, the needle type, and the presser foot. Our leather test uses vegetable-tanned tooling leather, not soft garment leather, at 2mm, 4mm, and 6mm thickness. Soft garment leather at 2mm is much easier to sew than firm tooling leather at the same measurement. A machine that passes our 2mm test may still struggle at 4mm. The heavy fabric performance score reflects actual results, not the manufacturer's broadest capability claim.
What is a serger and do I need one?
A serger (also called an overlocker) trims the fabric edge and encases it in thread in a single pass, producing the professional seam finish found inside commercial garments. A sewing machine and a serger are different tools. A serger does not replace a sewing machine for construction, buttonholes, topstitching, or decorative stitches. If you sew garments and want professional inside seams, a serger is a meaningful addition. If you primarily quilt, do home dec projects, or sew bags, a serger is less essential.
